Historic Voices: A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains

Isabella Bird was born in 1831 in Cheshire, England and became a famous female traveler during a period of time when women rarely left home. Isabella traveled all over the world and wrote several books. This one, A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains is considered her best. It chronicles her 1873, 800-mile journey through the Rocky’s on horseback. This Historic Voices excerpt is from the chapter in the book when Isabella went to Denver, Colorado. What a different experience she had than a visitor would have today.
