My 4th Great-Grandfather Died a Kentuckian

Smith Gregory Genealogy

Smith Gregory, my 4th great-grandfather, was born in 1760, in Mecklenberg County VA. He was the son of Richard Gregory and Anne Vaughn. In 1782, Smith married Martha (Patsy) Vaughn in Halifax County, Virginia. They had 10 children, including my 3rd great-grandmother, Nancy Caroline Gregory.

Smith’s father, Richard, left a will in 1812 (below).

It is believed that Smith Gregory migrated to Kentucky between 1780 and 1790 with his wife and perhaps two children. His father and his family also made this trip. Martha’s parents also moved to Kentucky before 1797.

The 1810 Census shows Smith with one slave. The Gregory Cemetery near Thompsonville, KY has a slave graveyard nearby. The Administrator of Smith’s estate bought Delia, a slave, for $385. Martha moved to Shelby Co., IN shortly after Smith’s death.
