North Carolina Native – Gone to Missouri
My 2nd Great-GrandAunt, Matilda Snow, was born in 1818 in Surry County, North Carolina. Her parents were John Snow and Frances (Frankey) Easley. Matilda married John Golding, January 22, 1835, in Surry County. Matilda died on April 20, 1870, and is married in the Lone Jack, Jackson County, Missouri cemetery. Matilda was only 52-years-old at the time of her death.
Also buried in the Lone Jack Cemetery is her daughter Mary (age 4), son Thomas (age 29), twins Nancy and James (4 months). I find no record of John being buried there, nor is there any obituary listed in the Lone Jack Cemetery book.
I’m sorry that I was unaware of Matilda when I last visited the cemetery or I would have taken a photo of her tombstone. At the time, though, I wouldn’t have recognized the surname “Golding”. Fortunately, someone posted this photo on FindaGrave. As you can see, her name was engraved as Mattildia. And, although you may not be able to see it clearly, above the hand and the bible is inscribed “Farewell”. Matilda was my 2nd great-grandaunt, sister of my 2nd great-grandfather, Stephen Isaac Snow.
