I first “met” James Knox via my grandmother. James was her grandfather and she loved telling me stories about him. In fact, her story about his Civil War service is my very first memory of being interested in family history. I was about 8 years old at the time she started telling the stories.
James served throughout the entire Civil War and was the only one of his family who stayed in long enough to take part in the Grand Review in Washington, D.C. in May of 1865. After that, he went back home to Missouri and farming. This is the only photo I have of him (shown with his wife, Sarah Hume). Click to enlarge the photo.
